Warriors of Athena - The Mother in Law visits.

I decided to try out a game against a Medusa. This one is from NorthStar Fugures Greek Legends of OGAM.

Achillies has moved up and been charged by the single skellie that could get there in two actions. He has a solid backing of his warband. The archer is off to the left and the thief to the right.

When you activate within 12 inches of a Medusa you have to take a turned to stone test. She is busy calling out "My eyes are up here!" I promptly failed two tests, fortunately the rest made it into contact. Achillies dealt with one Skellie and moved into contact with a second.
One of the Mymidons was felled by a Skellie. So, at the moment it's taken me three warriors to kill two skellies.

We go again, pass all the turn to stone tests. the two warriors do their part and kill a Skellie each however Achillies falls to a Skellie again!
The archer manages to turn himself to stone while the Thief is roaming the ruins looking for loot in all the wrong places.
The last two warrior close their eyes and get their stabbing done. The manage to take down the Medusa without adding to her statue collection. This was a good mission. It wasn't too swingy. However, 4 models are now turned to stone so they are dead. You can replace them with new followers but the new one's don't have the old ones experience or increases.

Combat is certainly deadly and I can see why only Odyssius made it home on a ten year Warriors of Athena campaign.

This left me with the impression that the experience system was harsh to the point of being worthless but on reading the scenarios in the Book of Quests they award experience for doing things in the scenario not just killing monsters.
There are also plenty of opportunities to use your abilities and there isn't an obvious "dump stat" that never comes into effect. This matches the Myths were powerful monsters were overcome by singing or musicial instruments, winning contests of riddles and solving puzzles. Not everything is solved by the sword.
