After having his pirate ship sunk from under him by Mazmar and his crew of undead revenants. Arzag finally makes it to shore and heads for the nearest village.
He arrives at what looks like a rundown fishing village and heads to the local tavern for a seat by the fire some ale and food.
One of the village leaders runs into the tavern and cries out that a baby has been taken. The suspect was last seen heading into the local graveyard. The village elder offers 30 gold to rescue the baby, Arzag might not be good at maths but 30 Gold to rescue a baby from one person smells fishier than the tavern food. What could go wrong?
Arzag stands up and accepts the deal. He then heads off to the graveyard. A village called Eric wants to come along and help.
Arzag growls in his best Chuck Norris voice, "I work alone. If you get in my way I will kill you myself"
Heading into the graveyard the place is a jumble of crumbling stone grave markers. Some figures are moving nearby.
Arzag ends up with all the activations to start the turn and runs over and, using Second Wind, lands a heavy blow on the first zombie. However, it does not crumple into a pile of slime like the ones he has fought previously. These must be strengthened by Dark Magic. They are much tougher and faster than the other undead he has fought.
Surprised, Arzag misses his follow up strike 6-10. The undead start swarming Arzag but miss 7-12, 5-11 and 9-13.
Arzag deals out 4 heavy blows, 12-8, 13-8, then misses 6-7 before landing a finishing strike 15-7.
The surviving zombie invigorated by the necromantic energies surrounding the graveyard, misses twice but the gets a hit through10-9.
The zombie continues its onslaught missing 6-7, 10-11 and 8-12 while Arzag fights defensively looking for an opening.
Arzag counter attacks with a pair of heavy blows 13-8 and 9-6. The last zombie topples over.
Looking around, Arzag sees an entrance leading underground built into the side of one of the tombs. Stairs lead downwards, looks like the right place.
Arzag finds a vial of holy water, this might be useful.
Arzag makes his way down the stairs into a space that has been made by hollowing out a space under several tombs enlarging the space into a small cavern like space.
There are three Ghouls in this room they start rushing over. These are much braver than the typical cowardly cannibals.
Arzag's sword greets a Ghoul as it slinks around a tomb. Moving up and landing a heavy blow with second wind is becoming very useful. I can see why Raskin likes it so much.
His second attack misses 8-9. The Ghoul strikes back and hits 13-10 and rolls bonus damage for its sharp claws so Arzag takes 2 wounds (down to 15)
The other Ghouls move up.
Arzag just manages to parry the Ghoul's attack 11-11 before launching into a series of strikes one of which manages to slip through 9-7 and take down the ghoul
As the first Ghoul falls a second moves up and attacks hitting 14-6 for 1 wound the second ghoul misses 5-14.
Arzag lands a pair of heavy blows 12-9 and 14-9 but his third attack on the third ghoul misses 11-16.
The last Ghoul hits 7-6 and causes 2 damage.
The last ghoul hits 10-9 for 1 damage but then misses 9-12 and 7-14.
Arzag then takes the next 3 actions hitting 11-5, missing 12-12 and then finishing his opponent 13-11.
Eric has made his way into the cavern and says that he wants to kill the vampire.
"Just keep out of my way!"
Arzag and Eric make their way down the stairs to the lair of the vampire. Unfortunately the stairs are trapped and Eric slips off the side landing in a heap. Arzag's cat like reflexes allow him to make it to the bottom of the stairs with his dignity intact.
Mauldred von Carstein is at the far end of the room, a throne covers his coffin decorated with trophies from his victories. A baby is on the Altair just behind him.
Mauldred glides forward towards Arzag. Eric darts around a pillar and shoots Mauldred with an arrow. He then manages to parry the swipe of Mauldred's sword 8-8. The second-strike, slides through 12-9 and the evil sword inflicts 2 damage.
Arzag moves up and douses Mauldred in the Holy water causing 2 damage.
The Vampire hits Eric 5-4. This allows Arzag to slip in a heavy blow 13-7. Mauldred is down to 3 health.
Arzag then lands a heavy blow 13-10. Sensing his peril Mauldred tries to strike Arzag but misses 7-10.
Arzag then lands a crushing strike which can't be defended to take the vampires last wound.
Arzag takes Mauldred's head and picks up the baby. Eric takes a look at Arzag grabs Mauldred's sword and races out of the cavern.
Arzag, his hands full of heads and babies can only shake his head ruefully. "That was an evil weapon, trying to master something like that and you could end up its slave."
Arzag makes his way back to the village and shows them the head, The villagers are appalled the head belongs to one of the village councilors. A mob is forming to run Arzag out of town when he holds up the baby. "This was in your councilor's tomb lair!"
The villagers agree to pay Arzag 15 gold (I knew 30 was too good to be true) but at least he can stay at the inn and get some more beer. He also gets 3 skill points.
All in all, a good night's work.
