Warriors of Athena - trial games

I created a hero based on Achillies from the movie Troy. So he is good a fighting and not so much else. I'm trying to get a feel for how many monsters you need to get into a game if I'm creating my own scenarios.

Here is some of my Greek terrain. We have Achillies with 2 barbarians, 3 Mirmidons and archer and a thief.
We are facing off against 12 skeleton warriors and a Revenant. Normally this would be pretty easy for a Frostgrave scenario so should be the warm-up before we get onto the tough missions. Right??

Achillies and one of the companions rush in and take down a Skellie. Turns out these Skellies are equipped like Hoplites and are fight 2. Eeek!

The Skellies pile in and Achillies companion falls. The three Myrmidons are holding off the Skellies in the pass and the archer and thief are looking for opportunities show of their skills.
Our Three Brave Lads manage to drive back one Skellie and kill another.
Achillies has gotten a replacement friend just in time because he is starting to take some hits. Heroes have about 20 health and there is no healing. The Archer brought down a skellie spearman looking to move forwards and stab someone.
Achillies and go bring down the Revenant commander.
The three brave lads bring down two more Skellies. These Skellies don't like it up em!
Disaster Achillies and his companion are brought down by the Skellies. The shame of dying to a normal Skelliw
Right lads that's the big shiny one done for, lets go and stick some spears in his mates.

So round 1 vs 12 Skellies was not a success. The Three Brave Lads were doing quite well and perhaps the better play was to use the terrain to funnel the Skellies into kill zones rather than rush out there and getting stabbed right in the vulnerable bits.

    Warriors of Athena is it's own set of Joe Mc *grave rules. It could be described as Homergrave. It's a closer cousin to Rangers of Shadow Deep and the heroes feel like those from Ghost Archipelago. It's fun though.

 We held our annual convention Call to Arms on the weekend of 30-31 August. About 160 wargamers from all over New Zealand came and played in 10 different events. Up on the stage we had a couple of different Napoleonic games. They are great looking games with nice armies in spiffy uniforms. The main hall was mostly filled with GW games. on the far left we have the MESBG, then AOS. These were two of our largest events. In the middle of the hall, we have the Horus Heresy games On the right of the hall, we have Kill Team, Flames of War, Warhammer Old World and some of the Demo games including Alan's huge zombie apocalypse game. Stargrave game 2 - It's a bug hunt

  George and I got in a second game of our Stargrave campaign. We used the dead or alive mission and generated the Brood Mother. I didn't think it made much sense for a group of human mercenaries to work for a creature that kept trying to get them to bathe in marinade. I replaced all the mercenaries with spiders using the creatures from Quadrant 37. We used the Transmat to beam down to the planet Spiridon This is a very hostile jungle planet teaming with all sorts of lethal predators. Receiving reports of unidentified aliens hiding in the Plane of Stones we set out through the jungle to find out what was going on.  Here is the Raknos nest, somewhat unexpected. In addition. the nearby volcano is showing signs of an imminent eruption. Here we have the crew deployed. We have a new Engineer, I think I forgot to deploy one of the team. Hobby update - Frostgrave campaign

For our next Frostgrave campaign we are going to theme it with Warhammer models. The idea is that we are all the forces of chaos and destruction and are going to bring down the kingdoms of men elves and dwarfs as part of our 12-step programme to ascension. Using a warhammer theme also makes it more accessible to people that have not played before. Everyone has some GW fantasy models. I have bought a few Warcry warbands and some underworlds boxes to make warbands. I have made some other models out of a box of undead peasants to round out some of the thieves and thugs that are not usually included in Warcry warbands. After reading a Conan story where he encounters a giant composite ghost. I remember I had this model from the Carnevale Doctors range and am painting it to look like it's a ghost.
