Saga - Battle of Hastings

 We started the year with a Saga game. Richard and I fought a 1066 game of Normans vs Anglo Danes.

Alan and Ed fought a Crecy themed game with French charging English archers.

Here is the start of the game. We had to deploy with a distance of M between units. The Anglo Danes made the first advance, marching forward.
The Normans begin their advance with the infantry advancing into the ruins to secure a defensive position.
The levies open fire on their opposite numbers.

The crossbowmen shoot the warriors opposite and the cavalry warriors ride up and hurl a shower of javelins. We end up killing three. The Knights charge the warriors on the right flank and kill 5 for the loss of one of their number. 
The Heathguard attack my warriors and kill 5 for the loss of 3. Two warriors had been shot by the arrows of the Anglo Dane levies.
My mounted warriors get caught by the Anglo Dane Fryd when they make a double move.
They lose the fight 5-3 and are driven back but now the warriors are isolated and down to half strength.
The Anglo Dane Heathguard go in again against the warriors.
With predictable results - 5-0 the Warriors are wiped out.
The Norman warlord has been bravely chasing down the Anglo Danish levies.
The Heathguard make a long charge into the Crossbowmen, that's 10 attacks hitting on 2s against 8 attacks hitting on 4s.
The Norman Knights have made a charge into the warriors and seen them off.
The crossbowmen put up a good fight but are defeated and driven back.

The Anglo Danish warlord charged the Norman warlord. Both sides were rolling 8 dice hitting on 4s and needing 3 hits to go through to kill their opponent. No one spent their opponents fatigue. Both Warlords struck down their opponent. That's a 1 all draw by KO.

With that darkness rolled over the land and the fields were left to the ravens.

This was a fun game, the death star of Anglo Dane heathguard performed as advertised. We worked out later that Richard hadn't played in 5 years and I had not played since Adepticon and not played with the Normans in years. It took a bit of time to shake the rust off.

 We held our annual convention Call to Arms on the weekend of 30-31 August. About 160 wargamers from all over New Zealand came and played in 10 different events. Up on the stage we had a couple of different Napoleonic games. They are great looking games with nice armies in spiffy uniforms. The main hall was mostly filled with GW games. on the far left we have the MESBG, then AOS. These were two of our largest events. In the middle of the hall, we have the Horus Heresy games On the right of the hall, we have Kill Team, Flames of War, Warhammer Old World and some of the Demo games including Alan's huge zombie apocalypse game. (more on that later) The ancient gamers are on their preferred side hall. It's warm, quiet and close to the toilets. There were 18 of them playing DBMM This is one of the MESBG tables. Stargrave game 2 - It's a bug hunt

  George and I got in a second game of our Stargrave campaign. We used the dead or alive mission and generated the Brood Mother. I didn't think it made much sense for a group of human mercenaries to work for a creature that kept trying to get them to bathe in marinade. I replaced all the mercenaries with spiders using the creatures from Quadrant 37. We used the Transmat to beam down to the planet Spiridon This is a very hostile jungle planet teaming with all sorts of lethal predators. Receiving reports of unidentified aliens hiding in the Plane of Stones we set out through the jungle to find out what was going on.  Here is the Raknos nest, somewhat unexpected. In addition. the nearby volcano is showing signs of an imminent eruption. Here we have the crew deployed. We have a new Engineer, I think I forgot to deploy one of the team. Hobby update - Frostgrave campaign

For our next Frostgrave campaign we are going to theme it with Warhammer models. The idea is that we are all the forces of chaos and destruction and are going to bring down the kingdoms of men elves and dwarfs as part of our 12-step programme to ascension. Using a warhammer theme also makes it more accessible to people that have not played before. Everyone has some GW fantasy models. I have bought a few Warcry warbands and some underworlds boxes to make warbands. I have made some other models out of a box of undead peasants to round out some of the thieves and thugs that are not usually included in Warcry warbands. After reading a Conan story where he encounters a giant composite ghost. I remember I had this model from the Carnevale Doctors range and am painting it to look like it's a ghost.
